Kubinka Airport was close to Moscow the capital of the Soviet Union, so it was ideal for receiving foreign military delegations. The local 234th Guard Fighter Air Regiment used export version MiG-21s, which flew on foreign air shows.
Soviet leadership here displayed new flying techniques to foreign buyers. The delegations of the Warsaw Pact and the military delegations of the Third World traveled here. Example, in 1973 the new MiG-23 Flogger fighter aircraft type was first displayed to foreign military customers at Kubinka airport.
In order to facilitate the holding of demonstrations, a permanent display air squadron was established on June 11, 1974, at Kubinka Airport. The new display air squadron was joined to the 234th regiment. The first three squadrons of the 234th Guard Fighter Air Regiment was an active combat air unit with MiG-21bis tactical fighter. The fourth display air squadron of the regiment got the Su-22 Fitter-F, MiG-23MS Flogger-E and MiG-23BN Flogger-H export version aircraft.
