979th Fighter Air Regiment in Afghanistan

The 979th Fighter Air Regiment spent two years in Afghanistan. One of it's squadrons settled in Kandahar between May 1986 and June 1987, another squadron between August 1987 and August 1988.

They carried out accompanying and bomber duties. The most outdated MiG-23 type was used in Afghanistan. The 979th regiment's early MiG-23ML Flogger-G fighters did not have BVP 50-60 chaff / flare dispensers.
