The French connection in the early seventies

On June 21, 1966, France made the somewhat shocking move to withdraw its troops from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Though France remained politically in NATO, its started to approach the Soviet Union too.

This was part of the bilateral visit of the military units. In Jun 1971, a French Military Delegation arrived in the Soviet-Union. The Kubinka airport was under renovation, so the French Mirage III was received at the Domodedovo airport. Here the Soviet pilots of the 234th Guard Fighter Air Regiment met with the French guests and could see the Dassault Mirage IIIC fighter.

Two months later, in September 1971, the Russians returned the visit. Six factory fresh (only two mounts old) MiG-21MF ‘Fishbed-J’ export fighter aircraft from the 234th Guard Fighter Air Regiment traveled to France. A Tu-124 ‘Cookpot’ cargo aircraft helped navigate to Reims airport in France.
