The 393rd Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO of the Soviet 19th Independent Air Defence Army defended Volvograd city from the South East in the eighties with MiG-23P and MLA 'Flogger-G' interceptor fighter aircraft at Privolzhskiy, Astrakhan airport. The 393rd regiment replaced their old Su-11 ‘Fishpot-C’ fighter to modern MiG-23 type in 1981. They received a few second-hand MiG-23MLA and many factory fresh MiG-23P ‘Flogger-G’ interceptor aircraft in the early eighties.
In the early nineties, the 393rd regiment merged with the 166th and 529th regiment. Then was renamed to 209th Guard Fighter Air Regiment. The MiG-23P 'Flogger-G' aircraft were handed over to the 218th Training Air Regiment of the Armavirskoye High Military Aviation college.
