The Sovietunion was not satisfied with the afghan pilot training system, therefore 26 modern L-39C Albatros training aircraft were sent to Afghanistan.

The new L-39s were manufactured at Aero Vodochody in Czechoslovakia. The first squadron 12 Albatros arrived to Afghanistan in 1977 with white painting above and gray at the bottom. The 393rd Training Air Regiment used these modern training types at Mazar-i-Shari airport.
Second phase, the Sovietunion delivered 14 L-39C Albatros to Afghanistan between 1983 and 1984.
