Nebit Dag town on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea has a cold desert climate. Summers are long, hot, and dry, while winters generally are mild and dry. Cargo boats transported clear water to the city because it wasn't in the desert.
In the thirties and forties, the Soviet Union deported the enemies of the state here. Later criminals were also deported here. Even in the sixties, they were not allowed to return home. It was very difficult and hard to live here.
Often the soldiers were also deported here as punishment. The 364th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO replaced their old MiG-17 ‘Fresco’ type to second-hand early Su-15 ‘Flagon-A’ interceptor in 1971.
They used this fighter type for seven years. In 1978 the 179th Guard and 364th Fighter Air Regiments PVO were merged here. They handed over their Su-15 ‘Flagon-A’ fighter to Marinovka airport in the North Caucasus District. Here the 700th Training Air Regiment of the Stavropol Higher Military Aviation College for Pilots used it as an instructor aircraft type.
The following pictures were taken at the maintenance hangar of the Soviet 364th Fighter Air Regiments PVO between 1976 and 1978.
