The Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' electronic warfare aircraft at Soviet High Command of the South-West Direction

The Soviet 118th independent Air Regiment for Electronic Warfare was established (with the merge of the 229th squadron and the one squadron of the 511th regiment) in 1983 at the Chortkov airport with Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' aircraft type. The second and the third squadrons of the 118th regiment were equipped with about 30 Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' electronic warfare and seven Yak-28U ‘Maestro’ trainer aircraft. In 1983 the first squadron received very new Su-24MP 'Fencer-F' type too.

The 118th EW regiment defended the Soviet Su-24 tactical bomber aircraft of the 32nd and 56th Bomber Air Division of the 24th Tactical Air Army with Yak-28PP and Su-24MP aircraft from 1984. Both divisions would have flown with Su-24 'Fencer-A/B/C/D' tactical bomber aircraft type over western Europe in case of war.

The Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' aircraft used three types of active jamming stations: group protection means "Bouquet" and "Beans" and self-protection "Lilac". The former made it possible to cover up a whole group of aircraft with interference; the latter served for self-defense (or mutual defense of two or more aircraft).

"Bouquet" was the active radio-electronic interference station worked was automatic against reconnaissance radar. The SPS-5 “Beans” was a direct noise interference station against fire-control radar stations. The Yak-28PP 'Brewer-E' electronic warfare aircraft used  "Lilac" active jamming station device for the self-protection.

The older Yak-28PP ‘Brewer-E’ type had more options than the Su-24MP ‘Fencer-F’ which was under development, the former being preferred by the regiment. In 1989, the Su-24MP ‘Fencer-F’ type moved to Germany for a short time. Here they were tested close to NATO and then returned to the 118th EW Regiment two years later at Chortkov airport.
