Soviet Carpathian Military District's
14th Tactical Air Army
in January 1, 1973

Last update: 27. 01. 2022.

Huge changes took place in the Soviet Carpathian Military District at the end of the 60's and the beginning of the 70's . The 14th Air Army participated in the occupation of Czechoslovakia and the strengthening of the Chinese Soviet border. In 1968 the regiment resettled from four airports (Ovruch, Ivano-Frankovsk, Cherlyany, Starokonstaninov) into these crisis areas. In the next five years, the aforementioned four airports operated as the base of operation, and six new regiments were formed before 1972.

Needed more new aircraft crews, therefore, pilot training was temporarily accelerated in 1968. Four pilot training regiments (example 69th independent Training Air Regiment at the Ovruch airport) were created. These only taught flying and closely related subjects. Younger boys came here with a DOSAAF pre-qualification as well as young graduates from other non-military pilot colleges. They were trained here for one or two years before they went to the combat regiment.

Four new regiments were formed at Ivano-Frankovsk and Cherlyany airports between 1969 and 1971. Three of these moved to the Chinese Soviet border at the beginning of the 70's with MiG-21 and MiG-17 aircraft so they can attack China if necessary.

The core of the new unit was from the experienced pilots in the first squadron. The second and third squadron was formed out of the freshly graduated personnel.
