Soviet Carpathian Military District's
14th Tactical Air Army
in January 1, 1978

In the second half of the seventies, the capabilities of the 14th Air Army was expanded with a new ability. Between 1976 and 1979 the Soviet 14th Air Army received nearly one hundred factory new Su-24 'Fencer-A/B' all-weather attack aircraft. The Soviet 7th, 230th, and 947th Front Bomber Air Regiments used these very modern tactical bomber types at the Soviet Carpathian Military District.

In the event of World War 3, these low-altitude flying strike aircraft would have been relocated to Czechoslovakia and attacked West-Germany from the south with nuclear weapons. The Su-24 ‘Fencer-A/B’ would have been a serious opponent for NATO's air defenses. The older MIM-23 Hawk air defense system, and the  F-104 Starfighter, and F-4 Phantom II interceptor aircraft would have had a difficult time capturing them over Western Europe.
