Soviet Yak-27R 'Mangrove' tactical reconnaissance aircraft type at Kolomija airport

In 1961, the first new Yak-27R 'Mangrove' tactical reconnaissance aircraft arrived at Kolomija airport in Ukrainian SSR. The main task of the 48th independent Guards Reconnaissance Air Regiment was reconnaissance flight over West Germany. In case of war, the Soviet Carpathian Military District's Air Force would have relocated to Czechoslovakia from Kolomija airport whit Yak-27R 'Mangrove' type.

The regiment's crew were not satisfied with the new high-speed reconnaissance aircraft type. There were structural defects, which were exacerbated by manufacturing defects, resulting in aviation accidents. These mistakes, of course, did not increase the popularity of the Yak-27R 'Mangrove' aircraft type among the Soviet pilots.

The 48th independent Guards Reconnaissance Air Regiment lost the first Yak-27R 'Mangrove' tactical reconnaissance aircraft on August 1, 1961. The pilot turned on the afterburner, but it didn't function on one of the engines. A huge opposing torque was generated and the pilot could not cope with it. Only the navigator catapulted, unfortunately, the pilot died. The Yak-27R aircraft was very unreliable. For example, the 48th independent Guards Reconnaissance Air Regiment lost three aircraft in 1965.

The old Yak-27R 'Mangrove' tactical reconnaissance aircraft type was replaced by newer MiG-25RB 'Foxbat' and Yak-28R 'Brewer-D' in 1973. The unreliable old Yak-27R 'Mangrove' aircraft flew until 1974 at the Kolomija airport.
